Fifth graders in Susan Turrini, Kelly Teape, Augustino Rettino and Jennifer Washington’s classes were eager to begin painting their ‘One Word’ canvases at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School on Jan. 10.

At the start of the week, the team of teachers took on the ‘One Word Challenge’ and prepared lessons based on Jon Gordon’s book, “One Word That Will Change Your Life.” The book talks about how focusing on one word can help create clarity, power, passion and life change. “Simply put, one word sticks.”

The lessons culminated with each student choosing one word that would serve as inspiration and guiding vision for the school year. Some students chose words such as effort, patience, confidence and leadership and then wrote a brief explanation of how they plan to achieve their goal. Some students plan to take more risks, participate more in class and be more creative.
