Dear Harborfields’ Community,

I would like to provide an update on the Harborfields Central School District’s Board of Education meeting held on September 18, 2013.  Specifically, the Board accepted a petition submitted by community members. The petition calls for the Board to present a special vote to the community to improve and upgrade athletic facilities, including the installation of two synthetic turf fields, upgrades to the grass fields and baseball fields, and improvements to the high school corridor to remove asbestos floor tiles.

By law, community members are permitted to file a petition with the Board of Education for the purpose described, as long as it contains the required number of signatures from qualified voters within the district. As explained by the district’s counsel at the business meeting, the Board of Education is required to accept the petition, as long as it meets a detailed list of criteria. The petition submitted by community members satisfied these legal requirements.

Moving forward, there are a number of mandatory steps, by law, the district must take prior to submitting the proposition to voters, including compliance with the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), an environmental impact assessment. The Board must then authorize a resolution to present the proposition to voters.

The district will continue to apprise the community of information related to this process.  If you have questions regarding this process, please contact us.

Thank you,

Diana Todaro
Superintendent of Schools
