Harborfields High School has been recognized with a gold medal in U.S. News and World Report’s Best High Schools Program, the highest award given. The high school placed second in Suffolk County, ninth on Long Island, 34th in New York State and 190th in the nation.

“This ranking is a testament to the hard work of everyone at Harborfields, with special recognition for our teachers, our students and our community,” said Dr. Rory Manning, principal of Harborfields High School. “Our students challenge themselves with the most rigorous classes because they know that the special person in front of the room will be there for them and lead them to success. We also know that support for our educational achievements begins at home. Our school would not be the quality school that it is without the support of our parents.”

Through the Best High Schools Program, public high schools throughout the nation are evaluated using a series of criteria. According to U.S. News and World Report, these include “using performance on state proficiency tests as benchmarks” and assessing “the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.”

While the Best High Schools Program recognizes the high level of courses that Harborfields High School offers, the district is also proud of the entire academic program that serves the wide range of interests of its learners. Over the past two years, the high school has made strides to develop programs that promote 21st-century skills, such as the student journalism program, the mobile computing club, and expanding partnerships with regional BOCES technical programs.

“Beginning in September 2014, we are excited to be able to offer internship opportunities through our school-to-work coordinator and continue to offer internships with local firms,” said Dr. Manning. “Our students will continue to be able to receive college credit in certain courses through our partnerships with local universities. Although these and many other programs we offer are not recognized by the U.S. News and World Report ranking, we place a higher value on our commitment to serving the needs of all learners within the walls of Harborfields High School. Our community can rest assured that we will continue to seek opportunities to expand on any and all opportunities in the future.”
