Four student-violists at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School participated in “Long Island Viola Day” on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Herricks High School.

Accompanied by their orchestra teacher, Cathy Ferraro, fifth-grade students Rubenia Aguilar, Emily Ambrose, Henry Barteski and Gabriella Bianco performed in a concert with 75 viola students and their teachers from schools all across Long Island. Students in grades 4 through 12 played in small group rehearsals led by experienced viola teachers and had the opportunity to work with guest clinician Dr. Shelly Tramposh, professor at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam.

Last held in 2004, students were fortunate to take advantage of this year’s Viola Day to share their appreciation for this unique instrument with other music enthusiasts and professionals. This event aims to provide participants with the tools to improve their musicality and technique, as well as perform wonderful viola ensemble literature.

TJL student musician Emily Ambrose commented after the concert, “I wish they had this every year!”
