Student Learning Reaches New Heights

Aligning with New York State and historic monuments curriculum, fourth-grade students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School took part in an educational field trip to the Fire Island Lighthouse.

Prior to climbing the 182 steps to the top of the lighthouse, students learned about the history of the lighthouse and its role in maritime history.

Through interactive demonstrations and a lecture led by the United States Life-Saving Service (USLSS), students experienced the history and authentic artifacts that represent the early US Coast Guard.

While at the historic landmark, students explored the natural environment and learned the importance of preserving the fragile area surrounding the lighthouse.
