As part of Computer Science Education Week, 76 fifth-grade LEAP (Lahey Enrichment Acamdeic Program) students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary school had an opportunity to assume the role of computer scientists during the international “Hour of Code” initiative.

Led by the LEAP/ entrichment teacher Christine Mayr, students viewed introductory video tutorials and were provided basic instruction in “Blockly,” a visual programming language that allows users to drag and drop blocks to write a line of code using Java Script.

While exploring the program, fifth-graders created over 2,600 lines of code. At the end of the week, fifth graders received a certificate of completion for demonstrating an understanding of basic computer science concepts.
