TJL Students Run the Iditarod

Fourth-grade students in Mrs. Thompson’s and Mrs. LaMonica’s classes at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently created their own Iditarod race. The students were inspired by the book Stone Fox, written by John Reynolds Gardiner, which tells the tale of a young boy who enters a dog sled race.
Within the fourth-grade classes, students were divided into teams, which then crafted “dogs” out of cereal boxes. The dogs were then attached to a line and the students used different strategies to wiggle and shake the lines to move their dogs forward.
The race was exciting and filled with fun and laughter. Most of all, the Iditarod served as a lesson in creative thinking and teamwork. The race was yet another example of how teachers and students are bringing literature to life in Harborfields.
