Students at Harborfields High School participating in the 12th annual Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Foundation Stock Market Game-Capital Hill Challenge received a visit from Congressman Steve Israel.

The 14-week SIFMA challenge organizes teams of middle and high school students by congressional district and state and teaches them the importance of saving and investing while simultaneously promoting a better understanding of the U.S. government. For the challenge, Rep. Israel met with Harborfields students who are investing a hypothetical $100,000 in listed stocks, bonds and mutual funds and learning the value of saving, investing and the capital markets as they work together to maximize the returns on their portfolios.

Rep. Israel spoke to students about the impact certain investments can have on America’s economy. Following his presentation, students were given the opportunity to ask questions about some of the topics Rep. Israel discussed. To commemorate his visit, high school students presented Rep. Israel with a framed certificate, and students received a certificate from the congressman in return.
