On May 27th, staff and student volunteers who produced OMS Idol, a show at which teachers and staff sang to a packed audience, took a trip to North Shore/LIJ Children’s Medical Center of NY to present a donation for pediatric cancer research and patient support. Students, who included members of the school’s Peer Mediation and TLC groups, were invited to meet with hospital staff and talk with Dr. Jeffrey Lipton, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

Dr. Lipton expressed his gratitude for the school’s donations and reiterated that student-led philanthropy efforts can impact lives. He explained that the funds raised by OMS can be applied to smaller experimental studies, which can lead to grants for larger-scale projects. Students also discussed careers in the medical field and how these donations would also help patients’ families with financial needs.

“Oldfield Idol” was held in early April and raised over $3,500 for Pediatric Cancer Research in memory of Jordan Yurkew. The sold-out show garnered a huge audience full of students, staff and parents. OMS teachers and administrators sang their hearts out, volunteering their time and energy for this great cause.
