Every Musical Minute Counts

Members of the Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School fourth-grade band and orchestra participated in a Practice-A-Thon to raise money for a local hunger relief organization.

Coordinated by music teachers Cathy Ferraro and Erik Johansen, fourth-grade students asked sponsors to pledge money for every minute they practiced playing an instrument for the month. Students totaled their minutes and collected the donations, with some students practicing between 500 and 1,000 minutes. Through their collaborative efforts, the fourth-grade band and orchestra students donated $1,200 to the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Long Island Cares.

“The students were excited to realize how their daily practice could end up being such a helpful contribution to so many people,” said Ferraro.
