Oldfield Middle School eighth-grader Kelsey Fowle and seventh-grader Katlin Modica were named winners of the 16th annual Huntington Youth Writes Contest.

The Huntington Youth Writes Contest is an annual writing contest open to students in grades four through 12 who attend school in Huntington. Under the advisement of English teacher Mary-Lynn Karpenske, a small group of middle school students created original writing pieces to enter the contest.

Among more than 1,100 entries, Fowle received second place and a $75 prize for her essay on animal rights, and Modica placed third in the short story category for her story “The Creek” and received a cash award of $50.
