In recognition of national bullying prevention awareness month, students at Oldfield Middle School participated in an Internet safety and cyberbullying assembly led by Deputy Rory R. Forrestal from the Computer Crimes Section of the Suffolk County Police Department.

During the presentation, students heard an age-appropriate message about ways to be safe on the Internet and the horrific impact cyberbullying can have on peoples’ lives. Deputy Forrestal shared stories about young adults who chose to end their life as a result of cyber bullying and the various media outlets cyberbullying can occur.

In addition, students were educated on the legal consequences and New York State laws in place related to harassment and falsely reporting information that could harm one or more people.

To conclude the assembly, students were afforded to opportunity to ask questions about information discussed during the presentation.
