In accordance with the New York State and historic monuments curriculum, students in Jennifer Thompson’s fourth-grade class at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School participated in an educational field trip to the Fire Island Lighthouse.
Prior to climbing the 182 steps to the top of the lighthouse, the students learned about the history of the lighthouse and its role in maritime history. Through interactive demonstrations and a lecture led by the United States Life-Saving Service, the fourth-graders experienced the history and observed authentic artifacts that represent the early U.S. Coast Guard.
While at the historic landmark, the students explored the natural environment and learned the importance of preserving the fragile area surrounding the lighthouse.
