In honor of Black History Month, students, administrators, teachers and Board of Education members recently gathered for a “Legacy of Strength, A Future of Hope” celebration at Oldfield Middle School.

The annual Black History Celebration featured a keynote address by Town of Huntington Councilwoman Tracey Edwards, as well as a welcoming address by Superintendent of Schools Diana Todaro. During their remarks, both speakers encouraged all in attendance to celebrate the differences that exist within the world. Ms. Edwards also urged students to journal the aspirations they have for their futures in a complementary notebook she provided.

Throughout the remainder of the evening, students representing Harborfields High School, Oldfield Middle School and Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, performed. The variety acts showcased the contributions of black artists including musicians, artists and poets. Several students also shared original pieces.

This year’s masters of ceremony included teacher Jeffrey Shade and students Kiana McLean and Zakiya “Ziggy” Celestine.
