Third-Graders Spark Knowledge

Third-grade students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School attended an engaging electricity assembly on Nov. 17 hosted by scientist and author Steve Tomecek. Also known as “The Dirtmeister,” Tomecek interacted with the students to expand their knowledge of the science curriculum.

Throughout the assembly, students learned about the history of electricity, what it is and the dangers that it possesses. Tomecek also invited students up to perform safe demonstrations to make his points across. He taught students the difference between a negative and positive charge using a balloon and hair. Tomecek also used his equipment to showcase the differences between a conductor and an insulator.

The students enthusiastically answered questions during the assembly and reacted to the different tools that Tomecek used. “My goal is to bring science to the masses in a fun way,” he said.
