Coding for the Future

Oldfield Middle School students participated in the school’s first annual Hour of Code week from Dec. 5-9. Students were encouraged throughout the week to sign up for the event in the library during their recess period.

A number of students took advantage of the opportunity, visiting the library computer labs and working on Code.org, an interactive program that teaches students the fundamentals of coding through games and activities.

“I really like that you can make the games yourself,” said sixth-grader Adelina Slansky.

Librarian Judy Boshnack teaches classes how to use Code.org during their library period.

“It’s important for kids to become familiar with coding,” she said. “I think many of these students might be interested in one day becoming programmers so doing the program and exposing them to these skills is a nice thing for them to use to prepare them for possible future career choices.”
