Helping Those in Need

In the wake of the devastation left behind by Hurricane Sandy, Oldfield Middle School language arts and science teacher Monica Zenyuh took action. She organized the “Adopt a School” program to unite clubs, schools and teams in the recovery effort.
The program currently supports 16 schools and districts throughout Long Island, Staten Island and the Rockaways. Ms. Zenyuh connects schools and organizations with those schools that were hardest hit by the storm. The schools in need are “adopted” and become the recipient of donations that meet their particular needs. In some cases, donors supply classroom materials that were destroyed, like paper and books; in others, playtime equipment and personal hygiene products are provided.
