Students enrolled in the Extended School Year Program at Washington Drive Primary School and Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School enjoyed a visit from some furry friends on Aug. 2. Held in the Washington Drive library, an educational Pet Pals event introduced students to rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals.

June Devitto, a representative from the Suffolk County Farm – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, taught children all about the popular pets. She reviewed what the various animals eat, their characteristics, the toys that they play with and the types of habitats in which they thrive. Together, the group sang the children’s song, “Do Your Ears Hang Low?”

Ms. Devitto also answered students’ questions about the animals and engaged them by asking what pets they have at home. As a special highlight, the children had several opportunities to pet their new pals.
