On Dec. 3, two exceptional senior Harborfields High School Scholar Athletes were honored as recipients of the 2019 Suffolk Zone Excellence in Physical Education Award. The Suffolk Zone is the local chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

The students, seniors Joseph DeSimone and Julia Malich, were nominated by their high school physical education teachers for exemplary leadership, character and passion that they bring to the high school physical education program.

The annual Suffolk Zone award is Suffolk County’s highest award in physical education. Students must possess an “A” average in physical education achievement, be scholastically sound, exhibit leadership skills and qualities in a physical education setting and have demonstrated overall leadership in schoolwide activities. Most importantly, students nominated for this honor must be outstanding role models to their peers and within the community.

In attendance for this special recognition and honor were the parents of the seniors, along with high school physical and health educators Rachel Jersky, Rob Franco, Suzanne Legge and district director of health, physical education and athletics John Valente.
