What purpose does the Council of PTAs play in the Harborfields School District?

A council of parent-teacher associations is a group of local PTA units organized under the auspices of New York State PTA. The purpose of Council is to bring together all the partners in education in the school district. In Harborfields, these partners consist of all the PTA units (WD PTA, TJL PTA,OMS PTA, HHS PTSA and SEPTA), the Booster Club, the School Board of Education, school district superintendent, administration, parents, teacher representative, and of course, the children. Through Council programs, events and meetings, its primary objective is to promote the welfare of children and youth. While a council of PTAs has great latitude in responding to the needs of children, Harborfields’ Council traditionally provides a number of programs and activities on a consistent and yearly basis. They are as follows:

  • Annual Scholarship Show [since 1975]
  • Scholarships for graduating seniors [that has provided over $217,000.00 worth of scholarships since 1975]
  • Parenting workshops on timely and apropos topics. Visit the new Parents as Partners web page to learn more and sign up online.
  • Informs residents of school board candidates; philosophies and qualifications (Meet the Candidates Night)
  • Health & Welfare programs and events
  • Arts in Education programs and events, grades K - 12
  • Pertinent legislative updates
  • School budget hearings, in coordination with the school district, that enable the community to be informed about the contents of proposed school budgets
  • An informative PTA website that brings timely Harborfield PTA information to the community
