Sixth-grade students of Oldfield Middle School participated in the first annual Literacy Committee Read-a-Thon. The fundraiser took place on Friday, March 2, a date celebrating both the birth of author Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and the nationally recognized “Read Across America Day.”

Over 100 students pledged to read a certain amount of time or number of pages between the hours of 8:45 a.m. and 2:50 p.m., and gathered monetary donations based on their anticipated amount of reading.
Author, teacher and Washington Drive Primary School parent Scott Starkey visited Karen Ritter’s second-grade classroom to explore with students what it means to be a writer. A fifth-grade teacher for over 15 years, Mr. Starkey recently wrote the middle school level novel How to Beat the Bully Without Really Trying.

Mr. Starkey explained how he uses his own experiences and observations to take notes for his books and discussed the processes of drafting, revising, editing and publishing a story. He made a clear connection between the skills taught in school during Writer’s Workshop and the work he does every day.

Mr. Starkey took the time to answer students’ questions and shared the first chapter of the book he is currently writing, a sequel to his first novel.

Fancy Nancy Author Pays a Visit to WDPS

The second-grade students of Washington Drive Primary School received a special visit from Jane O’Connor, author of the popular Fancy Nancy collection.

The students expressed their excitement by dressing in their “fanciest” attire for the visit, in which Ms. O’Connor read her newest book, Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet. She also explained that part of being “fancy” was exhibiting good posture, and gave twenty audience members the chance to demonstrate this by balancing bananas on their heads.

The prolific author discussed some of the process involved in writing and publishing a book and took the time to answer students’ questions. Before leaving the school, she signed and personalized copies of her books presented to her by students.

The members of the audience enjoyed the time they had to share with the accomplished author.

This year, the students of Thomas J. Students made a pledge to read with parents at home every day. They also participated in fun in-school activities such as Guest Reader Day, during which guests visited the classrooms and read, Wear Red Day to honor Reading Every Day, and D.E.A.R Day (Drop Everything And Read). During D.E.A.R. Day, students carried a book with them all day and stopped to read when they were signaled to at an undisclosed time. The celebration of reading concluded with the Scholastic Book Fair.

Washington Drive Collects Pouches for Purses

Washington Drive Primary School, in conjunction with the PTA Green Committee chaired by Jennifer Totten, has once again taken part in an exciting school-wide recycling program.

Approximately four years ago, teacher Jacinta Pisano introduced the idea of collecting Capri Sun-type juice pouches and sending them to Terracycle, a company that upcycles them and turns them into bags, lunch bags and pencil-cases. Upcycling is a process that requires even less energy to produce a new product than recycling. Not only will the juice pouches take up less space in landfills, but the school will get two cents back for each juice pouch sent, money which goes to benefit the needs of students in the district.

Holiday Happenings in Harborfields

Kindergarten students in Cari Sacks’ class at Washington Drive Primary School recently completed a cross-curricular unit of study using the familiar story of the Gingerbread Man.

Students read several stories centered on variations of the famous character, comparing and contrasting the story elements. The gingerbread theme was also used to solve mathematical problems and compose sentences.

As a fun culminating activity, the students invited their parents into their classrooms to help decorate gingerbread homes, to be shared with their families during the holidays.

While Mrs. Sacks’ class worked diligently to bring holiday cheer to their families, Monique Keith-Golding’s second-grade class at Washington Drive took part in a “bucket-filling” activity aimed at spreading cheer to needy children on Long Island. The class worked in conjunction with the Holiday Magic Organization, a group that provides holiday gifts to families in homeless or transient situations. The second graders voluntarily purchased gifts, organized them into groups, wrapped them, and created holiday cards to accompany the donations.

Students Are Police SMART at Washington Drive

Students of Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District participated in the annual Police SMART program with Suffolk County Officer Rosemarie McCormack.

Officer McCormack spent time in each classroom introducing and reviewing the concepts of police safety with students.

“What is an emergency?” she asked students in Mrs. Fealy’s kindergarten class. “I am going to show you what you can do to make good choices in those situations.”

She reviewed concepts of stranger danger and dialing 911 and reinforced the concepts that students were exposed to in prior visits.

Washington Drive Students Learn to “Fill Buckets”

Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently took part in the character education “bucket filler” presentation, which aims to impress upon children the idea that their words and actions affect others.

The concept of filling or emptying someone’s emotional “bucket” is one that allows children to understand the motivation behind behaviors. The presentation urges children to make a personal commitment to do their best to be bucket fillers rather than dipping into others’ buckets, and to use their “lids” to protect their buckets as well as the buckets of other people.

WWII Hero Visits Harborfields

Students in Jeffrey Shade’s seventh and eighth-grade social studies classes at Oldfield Middle School were treated to a very special guest in honor of Veterans Day. Domenick Gargiulo, a veteran of WWII, visited the school accompanied by Bob Santo, an Air Force veteran of Vietnam and fellow member of the American Legion of Greenlawn Post 1244, to speak with students and offer them a firsthand account of events they have only had the opportunity to read about in books.

Mr. Gargiulo served as a flight engineer on C-46 aircrafts while stationed in India for three years. He explained to the class, which included his grandson Nicholas, that he spent those years “flying the hump” – that is, traveling over the Himalayan Mountains to deliver supplies to the Chinese. He answered students’ questions and recounted various memorable accounts of his time in war, such as the day he thought his plane was going down in the Himalayas, and especially the day he was notified that the war had ended and he was going home!

The students were eager to look at the photos Mr. Gargiulo brought in and hear about the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross he had received. At the end of his presentation, the students gave him a stack of thank you cards, leaving him emotional and grateful. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to connect with history, and a wonderful way for a hero to be honored.

Harborfields Placed on College Board’s 2nd Annual AP Honor Roll

367 School Districts Across the Nation Are Honored

The Harborfields Central School District is one of fewer than 400 public school districts in the nation that have been honored by the College Board with placement on the 2nd Annual AP Honor Roll for simultaneously increasing access to Advanced Placement coursework while maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams.

Achieving both of these goals is the ideal scenario for a district’s Advanced Placement program because it indicates that the district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit most from AP coursework. Since 2009, Harborfields Central School District increased the number of students participating in AP from 319 to 400 while maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher, from 87 percent in 2009 to 86 percent in 2011.

“We are so proud to acknowledge, for the second year in a row, Harborfields High School’s ranking on the AP Honor Roll,” stated Acting Superintendent Diana Todaro. “This accomplishment demonstrates the strong leadership of our high school, in addition to a dedicated staff and the commitment of our students to their studies. We congratulate our staff and students on achieving this prestigious award!”

Why Marching Band/Kickline Clinic?

The 4th annual HHS summer marching band clinic has come and gone and by all indications, this past summer’s clinics was one of the very best! While the latter part of summer vacation each year beckons many students and staff to enjoy the beach and the opportunity to travel, the third week of August each year finds the student members and instructional staff of the Harborfields High School Marching Band and Kickline involved in a wholly unique activity: marching band clinic!

It takes a very special kind of student to join their high school marching band or kickline. Membership in the HHS marching band and kickline program is voluntary and involves making a time commitment to working together towards a common goal: support of our school and community! The annual marching band clinic is a place where school spirit and leadership is born and new friendships are made. New band members and members of the HHS kickline learn skills, gain confidence, and become part of the marching band and kickline family.

In a whirlwind 3 days, marching band clinic fosters a strong sense of student leadership, and focuses on marching fundamentals and performance skills in all areas of the high school marching band. Participants receive intensive instruction from the instructional staff (Ms. Allison Scilla, Mr. Dan Bilawsky, Mr. Mike Giannetta and Ms. Nicole Rhodes) and student drum majors, HHS seniors: Megan Lyons and Jeena Moss on an individualized and group basis. Most clinic sessions take place outdoors so participants come prepared for long days on the football field working to synchronize the marching band show music (which is memorized by all musicians prior to the start of clinic) with computerized drill instructions written and designed to form interesting patterns on the football field by Ms. Scilla using a marching band software program called, Pyware. The evenings at clinic are set aside for indoor music rehearsal and also some fun opportunities to build new and lasting friendships.

The annual marching band clinic is operated by the Long Island Summer Music Workshop and is held on the grounds of the SUNY Farmingdale Campus. Clinic students are housed in college dorm facilities and make use of the field and rehearsal facilities at SUNY Farmingdale. The experience of living in college dorms, eating in a college dining hall and making new friends is an important part of the marching band clinic experience and for most students, is also their first experience of what it might be like to live away at college one day. Best of all, the camaraderie and sense of school spirit and unified purpose instilled in our students at marching band clinic each year becomes in Dr. Bennardo’s words: “something many of our high school student alumni talk about as their most favorite moments at HHS.”

The grand finale of clinic each summer is an exhibition performance in SUNY Farmingdale’s Stadium on the final day to which parents and friends are invited. To say the least, it is amazing and most impressive to see just how much can be accomplished by our students and staff when they are focused and able to work together away from other distractions. This is especially important this year as the marching band and kickline readied for the very early Harborfields Homecoming festivities the very first weekend after our return to school in September!

So, come out and support your Harborfields High School marching band and kickline as they dazzle the home crowds at halftime during our Varsity Tornado Football home games or as they march proudly down the street in our community parades. You can also catch the HHS Marching Band and Kickline in performance at the Annual NEWSDAY HS Marching Band Festival held at Hofstra University, Tuesday, October 18th. Advance tickets (no tickets will be sold at the door) are available through any HHS marching band or kickline member, or through the district music and art department office: 754-5360 x. 401.

Hats Off to the Class of 2011

The Class of 2011 took their final steps onto the Harborfields High School field on Saturday, June 25 at the district’s 52nd Commencement Ceremony. As a class of achievers, all students walked in with their heads high to enormous applause and praise by parents, family and peers. The ceremony was laced with special performances by the high school band and senior members of the high school choir, including a special rendition of the Harborfields High School Alma Mater.

Prior to the presentation of the diplomas, Deputy Superintendent Diana Todaro addressed the graduates, on behalf of Superintendent Frank Carasiti. In her remarks, Ms. Todaro stated, “Your performance and successes, as a class, have contributed to Harborfields High School’s ranking as a top school in the nation, according to a recent Newsweek article. It is evident that you are committed, caring, community oriented and willing to do whatever is needed to succeed or help your fellow classmates. You have set a standard for future classes to follow and emulate.”

The Class of 2011 Salutatorian, Pamela Wax, then addressed her fellow graduates. In her speech, Pamela said, “Harborfields is so special. We are special because of the family we have created, because of the love that we have for each other, and the pride that we have for our school. We are special because each of our journeys is a story, and the beginning and ending end up at the same place. We have come full circle and now have to leave the comfort of our second home to conquer the world.”

Valedictorian Caitlin Lyons then offered her words of reflection to the audience and offered the following advice: “Live each day as if each were its own adventure, because you never know what opportunities await you. Live your present but remember your past, for who you are is a result of what you have done and who you will be is a result of what you will do today. Each and everyone one of you graduating today is prepared to make a name for yourselves in the world, and each of you will be going you own way. Take with you the spirit of Harborfields and the strength and lessons you have taken from your time here.”

William Hennessy, social studies teacher and dean of students, then addressed the graduates as the ceremony’s featured speaker, as chosen by the Class of 2011. In his speech, he offered advice to the graduates as to what pieces of Harborfields the Class of 2011 should carry with them into the future, as suggested by his fellow colleagues. Among them were acceptance, tolerance, enthusiasm, and passion. “My own advice to you is to always love learning,” Mr. Hennessy said. “Keep loving the exploration of new ideas.”

High School Principal Dr. David Bennardo then delivered a moving speech that touched upon how special the Class of 2011 is. He compared the class to the “Little Engine That Could,” noting that the class had the highest grade point average in Harborfields High School history, made the playoffs in numerous sports, and won more All-County and juried music awards than any other class. In addition, he stated that the Class of 2011 raised more than $90,000 for those less fortunate. “You allowed us the thrill of rooting for the underdog and dreaming big as you defied the odds and made believers out of a proud community. You have made an indelible impact upon our school and forever captured the hearts and minds of your high school family,” Dr. Bennardo said.

Dr. Bennardo then presented a diploma to the family of Nikki Kantor, a beloved member of the Class of 2011 who passed away last summer. Following the emotional presentation, the members of the Class of 2011 were called to the podium to receive their diplomas to the cheer of their family and friends. After the final diploma was presented, students were instructed to move their tassels to the opposite sides of their caps. Once officially announced as graduates, these young adults celebrated by tossing their caps into the air. Following the recessional march, graduates reunited with their loved ones as official alumni of the Harborfields Central School District.

WDPS Students Take a “Trip Around the World”

Students in Melissa Owen’s first-grade class at Washington Drive Primary School took a “Trip Around the World” during a performance for family and friends. To begin the show, the students led the audience to China through a song entitled “Fong Swei.” They then traveled to Italy by singing “That’s Amore” and “On Top of Spaghetti” and concluded their trip in Africa with a variety of songs including “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Flanked by scenery depicting the above countries, the students were dressed in traditional outfits worn in China, Italy, and Africa. In addition to singing beautiful songs for their family and friends, the children also shared important facts about the countries. In preparation for their “trip around the world,” the students spent time in class researching their countries and learning about the various customs and cultures of each.

OMS Students Deliver Donation to Northshore/LIJ Children’s Hospital

On May 27th, staff and student volunteers who produced OMS Idol, a show at which teachers and staff sang to a packed audience, took a trip to North Shore/LIJ Children’s Medical Center of NY to present a donation for pediatric cancer research and patient support. Students, who included members of the school’s Peer Mediation and TLC groups, were invited to meet with hospital staff and talk with Dr. Jeffrey Lipton, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

Dr. Lipton expressed his gratitude for the school’s donations and reiterated that student-led philanthropy efforts can impact lives. He explained that the funds raised by OMS can be applied to smaller experimental studies, which can lead to grants for larger-scale projects. Students also discussed careers in the medical field and how these donations would also help patients’ families with financial needs.

“Oldfield Idol” was held in early April and raised over $3,500 for Pediatric Cancer Research in memory of Jordan Yurkew. The sold-out show garnered a huge audience full of students, staff and parents. OMS teachers and administrators sang their hearts out, volunteering their time and energy for this great cause.

HHS Students Thank Local Veterans

On Friday, June 3, Advanced Placement Government students from Harborfields High School welcomed approximately 30 local veterans to the school for a special breakfast in their honor. Coordinated by teacher Patricia Taylor, the annual event is one final gesture on behalf of the students to the nation’s heroes before the school year ends.

Veterans from the local American Legion and VFW Posts spent the morning with students, telling them stories of their service over breakfast. Students enjoyed listening to the experiences of veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Some veterans also brought photo albums along to show students photos from their time in service.

One guest, World War II veteran Michael Colamonico, captivated students with his story of being held a Prisoner of War. “I tell you this story because you should know what we – and some of your own grandparents – went through,” he said.

Fellow veteran Alex Squillace, who served in Korea from 1956-1957, told the Harborfields students that the conditions he lived in were primitive. He said, “We were required to stay on one road the entire time – if you deviated from that path, you were in trouble.” Mr. Squillace commented that he attends the Harborfields High School breakfast every year. “I enjoy it because I like to give kids a flavor of what it was like during that time,” he explained.

Family members gathered around the school’s bus loop and watched as the energetic youngsters paraded around, waving homemade pom-poms and marching to patriotic songs. Following the brief parade, the kindergarteners sang a variety of tunes, including “God Bless America,” “America the Beautiful” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

TJL Students Run the Iditarod

Fourth-grade students in Mrs. Thompson’s and Mrs. LaMonica’s classes at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently created their own Iditarod race. The students were inspired by the book Stone Fox, written by John Reynolds Gardiner, which tells the tale of a young boy who enters a dog sled race.

Within the fourth-grade classes, students were divided into teams, which then crafted “dogs” out of cereal boxes. The dogs were then attached to a line and the students used different strategies to wiggle and shake the lines to move their dogs forward.

The race was exciting and filled with fun and laughter. Most of all, the Iditarod served as a lesson in creative thinking and teamwork. The race was yet another example of how teachers and students are bringing literature to life in Harborfields.

HHS Students Travel to Ethiopia to Help Over 300 Orphans

During spring recess, three special students from Harborfields High School traveled to Ethiopia, where they volunteered their time and energy to assist more than 300 orphans. While in Africa, students Harry Solomon, Sam Solomon, and Aria Wiseblatt helped to distribute donated clothing, health-related items, and food to the young orphans. The students also painted the orphanage and spent priceless time visiting with the members of the Ethiopian orphanage.

The students traveled to Africa through a trip arranged by Operation Hearts and Home, a non-profit organization based in Cold Spring Harbor that is dedicated to improving the lives of orphans around the world. All three students agreed that the trip has changed their perspective on life.

Reflecting upon his experience, Sam said, “It changes your perspective on the entire world. It is one thing to hear about poverty, but it is another thing to see it.” Harry added, “Standing here today back home in Harborfields, it’s hard to imagine so many people living in poverty. It’s a completely different world.”

Despite witnessing heartbreak, the students noted how happy the orphans were. They also enjoyed the time spent “neck dancing” with the youngsters, a traditional dance featuring unique movements of the neck and shoulders.

According to Aria, “I would love to go back someday and see the impact that we made. I know they’re still suffering and we can always do more to help.”

Harborfields High School Principal Dr. David Bennardo said, “It takes a very special person to leave the safety and comfort of our national borders during spring break and give selflessly of themselves to improve the lives of others. Harry, Sam, and Aria serve as living proof that the brightest and best among us are capable of the most empathetic, enlightened leadership.”

OMS Idol Benefits Pediatric Cancer Research

In early April, members of the Oldfield Middle School community within the Harborfields Central School District held their third annual “Oldfield Idol,” which raised over $3,500 for Pediatric Cancer Research in memory of Jordan Yurkew.

During OMS Idol, OMS teachers and administrators volunteered their time to belt out their favorite tunes in front of a packed audience of students, parents, and fellow staff members. Principal Joanne Giordano and science teacher Chris Murphy served as hosts and kept the crowd entertained throughout the evening.

This year, OMS Idol held a special significance not only for the OMS community, but also for the high school, where Jordan would have been a senior this year. His younger sister, Danielle Yurkew, along with Jordan’s friends, participated in the event by making brief but poignant speeches about Jordan and how OMS Idol started in 2007 to celebrate his life.

In May, staff and student volunteers who helped produce OMS Idol will travel to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to present a check for pediatric cancer research. Students will be given a guided tour of the facility and meet medical staff who will use the donation for research into cures for pediatric cancers.

WDPS and Harborfields Community Raises $20,000 for Walk for a Wish

On April 9, the Washington Drive Primary School community held its annual Walk for a Wish around the high school track. To participate, students were encouraged to raise money, either through seeking donations, donating their allowances, or holding their own individual fundraisers. All money raised for the event was donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to seriously ill children.

The Harborfields community truly united for this event, with almost 1,000 people in attendance, making this year’s Walk for a Wish the most successful to date. While the school’s goal was to raise more than last year, the community far surpassed this amount by donating approximately $20,000! This year’s Walk for a Wish brings the grand total raised for the Make a Wish Foundation over the past four years to nearly $51,000.

With the funds raised this year, Washington Drive is able to grant the wish of Bonnie, a three-year-old girl from Bay Shore who suffers from chronic lung disease. Bonnie’s wish is to go to Disney World. Since the community raised almost $20,000, the Make a Wish foundation is not only able to send Bonnie and her parents to Disney World, but Bonnie’s 12 other special needs siblings and two additional adults, as well. The “enhanced” wish is truly a dream for the family.

At the Walk for a Wish event, students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members walked in unity around the high school track for one hour. Students were proud to hand over the earnings to benefit other children. According to first-grade student Sophia Karl, who raised money by selling a dress on eBay and folding laundry at home, “I wanted to help other people who were sick.” Fellow student Alexandra Paul also got in the spirit of giving by helping her mom clean dishes and fold laundry. “I’m just trying to help,” Alexandra said.

Thank you to all who participated in this worthy cause, especially the following high school athletic teams who lent their support: Boys’ JV and Varsity Lacrosse, Oldfield Middle School Boys’ Lacrosse, Girls’ JV and Varsity Lacrosse, Girls’ JV and Varsity Softball, and Boys’ Varsity Baseball.

WDPS Students “Dress Up 2 Cure” Rett Syndrome

On April 1, first-grade students in Deborah Phillips’ class at Washington Drive Primary School helped kick off Autism Awareness month with a special event. They participated in the nationwide fundraising event titled “Dress Up 2 Cure,” during which the students donated their spare change and came to school dressed in a fun, silly way to help spread hope.

Rett Syndrome is a severe neurological disorder that is the most physically disabling form of autism. The Dress Up 2 Cure event was started in 2006 as a way to raise awareness about the disorder.

In addition to dressing up, the students in Ms. Phillips’ class created a Garden of Hope Board, on which they posted good wishes for the people afflicted with Rett Syndrome.

Harborfields School District Rate High for Its "Return on Educational Investment"

The Center for American Progress recently listed the Harborfields Central School District as having a high return on educational investment (ROI), based on how much “learning” the district produces for every dollar it spends. Harborfields was rated in the top tier relative to other districts throughout New York State.

The Center for American Progress, an organization dedicated to “improving the lives of Americans through progressive ideas and action” researched approximately 9,000 school districts throughout the country for its study. The Center evaluated spending data for each district, as well as achievement results. Those districts, such as a Harborfields that rated in the top third of achievement and the bottom third in spending, received a green rating by the Center, its highest possible designation.

According to Superintendent of Schools Frank Carasiti, “We are extremely proud of our district’s rating. This is a direct result of the hard work of our dedicated staff and the support of the community. The ongoing goal of the Board of Education and administration is to provide the best education possible for the students of Harborfields while minimizing the cost impact on our community.”

For more information on the study or to view an interactive map that compares district to district, please visit:
www.americanprogress.org/issues/2011/01/educational_productivity/

TJL Students Grant Birthday Wishes

Andrea Horowitz, a fifth-grade teacher at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, has been actively involved in Birthday Wishes, a community service organization that brings birthday parties to homeless children. The organization believes that all children, regardless of their living situation, deserve to have their birthday celebrated joyfully. According to Ms. Horowitz, “This is a simple concept, but one that makes a huge difference.”

Ms. Horowitz has been helping to provide items that are needed for the birthday celebrations at a local homeless shelter by involving staff members and students of Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School. Her class recently collected and made homemade items to put together birthday boxes for Birthday Wishes.

The students really enjoyed giving their time and creativity to this project. “I feel good about doing this because we are helping people who don’t have as much,” said student Gianna Masi. Zachary Yorio summed it up best by saying, “It was good to do and it was fun to do!”

WDPS Students Test Their Five Senses

At Washington Drive Primary School, kindergarten students in Ms. Kristin Divers’s class tested their five senses, a topic they have been learning about in school. With the help of parent volunteers, students rotated between several stations. At each center, students were asked use their senses to make certain predictions.

At the first station, children used their hearing by listening to various sounds on a CD player. They were asked to identify the sounds they heard while playing a game of “Sound Bingo.” At the next center, students tested their sense of taste by eating certain foods. They experienced eating items that were sweet (chocolate), salty (pretzels), sour (lemon), and bitter (grapefruit). The students then voted on their favorite taste.

At the third station, the kindergarteners applied the sense of touch by feeling items in “mystery boxes.” The students then used the scientific method to make predictions on what the items were. At another center, the children smelled various scents, including coffee, chocolate, lemon, and shaving cream. Without seeing the items, the students made predictions on what the scents were.

The final sense of seeing was explored together as a class. Each student was asked to look around the room and draw three items he/she saw.

OMS Celebrates Anti-Violence Day

On February 17, students and faculty at Oldfield Middle School celebrated Anti-Violence Day with a special assembly presentation. For the day, teachers and administrators donned pink T-shirts with the slogan “Don’t Be a Bystander, Be a Hero,” a phrase emphasized to students earlier in the year at an anti-bullying assembly. The color pink was chosen based on a high school freshman in Nova Scotia who wore pink to school and was bullied by his peers. Two seniors, after witnessing the harassment, purchased dozens of pink T-shirts for their fellow classmates to wear, as a message to the bullies.

During the program at OMS, school officials emphasized the programs and resources available for students at OMS, including the TLC program and peer mediation. Through these programs, select students are trained to identify and counsel their peers with problems they might be having. The program then continued with select students reciting original poems they had written based on the theme of “Don’t Be a Bystander, Be a Hero.”

The program concluded with a slideshow, featuring photos of every student in the school. The presentation was set to the songs “We Can Work It Out” and “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.”

Mystery Readers Welcomed at TJL

In early February, students at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School were surprised by a “Mystery Reader” as part of the Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) week. Mrs. Thompson’s fourth-grade class was privileged to have Superintendent Frank Carasiti come into their classroom to read Snowflake Bentley, a Caldecott Medal picture book. The book, written by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and illustrated by Mary Azarian, tells the story of Wilson Bentley, the first person to learn that snowflake crystals have six branches and that none are ever alike.

In appreciation for serving as their “Mystery Reader,” Mrs. Thompson’s class created a book of thank-you notes to Superintendent Carasiti. They used some of Wilson Bentley’s snowflake photographs and wrote in white to mimic the snowflake crystals. The students also discussed the many snow days that the district has had this year, and encouraged the Superintendent to call delayed openings for future snowstorms. The students all agreed that they would rather have days off during warmer weather. Of course, Mr. Carasiti agreed that he too is tired of the snow, and would do the best he could do. The children truly enjoyed having this special guest as their “Mystery Reader” during PARP Week.

WDPS Students Celebrate Cultural Heritage

Second-grade students in Mr. Nick Coppola’s class at Washington Drive Primary School have been participating in a lesson on the world and its cultures. To celebrate the unique cultural heritage of each student, classroom parents were invited to class. During their visit, parents discussed how their lives or the lives of their ancestors differed from their native countries to the United States.

During a recent visit, Mr. Coppola’s class welcomed Mrs. Palencia, who shared her story of growing up in El Salvador. She discussed the customs, traditions, and food native to her home country. “In El Salvador, you walk everywhere. Where I grew up, there weren’t any cars. You walked to school, to the store, and to the river to do your laundry,” she stated.

She then shared homemade pupusas with the students, an El Salvadorian dish made of corn tortillas and typically stuffed with cheese or meat. The second graders enjoyed their special treat while they continued to ask Mrs. Palencia about her life growing up.

Mrs. Palencia concluded her visit by sharing one important piece of advice with the class. “You all need to continue with school and graduate so you can go and become something you really want to be.”

Spelling Superstars at OMS

In late January, 32 Oldfield Middle School students participated in the most exciting spelling bee to date under the direction of English Department co-coordinators, English teacher Kerri Brierton and AIS teacher Marianne Dono. Students in grades six through eight tackled many complicated words such as “veterinarian,” “laborious,” “hypocrisy,” “nonchalant,” and “proximity.”

After seven grueling rounds, only two contestants remained - seventh grader Jack Ratti and eighth grader Alisa Chang. They both went word for word for 12 more rounds. Finally, Jack emerged as the winner in round 20 by correctly spelling “reservoir.”

As this year’s winner in the school’s Scripps National Spelling Bee Program, Jack will now compete on February 8, 2011, in the Semifinals Written Test Round at Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School. Jack also receives a free online powerspeaK12 program. This online language-learning program is designed specifically for children in grades 3-12 and offers five languages from which Jack may choose one to study. In addition, Jack and Alisa will each receive a free, one-year subscription to Kids.Britannica.com.

HHS Welcomes Korean Exchange Students

On January 20, students at Harborfields High School welcomed eight Korean high school exchange students. They greeted their guests with a special welcome reception, during which the Harborfields students presented on a variety of topics. They provided an overview of academics, student leadership, extracurricular activities, and the transition between high school and higher-level education at Harborfields High School.

Following the presentations, the Korean students had many questions for their American peers and noted that the biggest difference between the two cultures was the structure of their school day. In Korea, a typical high school day consists of eight straight hours of academics, with almost no extracurricular activities or sports.

The exchange students then had an opportunity to take part in a chemistry class to see first-hand how an American high school classroom operates. The Harborfields chemistry students welcomed their peers by saying “hello” in Korean.

The Korean students’ visit to Harborfields was coordinated through Mahanaim in Huntington and was part of a month-long trip to the United States.

WDPS Students “Follow the Reading Road”

In mid-January, Washington Drive Primary School kicked off its annual Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) event, sponsored by the school’s PTA. During PARP week, students are encouraged to read at home (with the help of parents, if needed) for at least 20 minutes a day. The school’s goal for the week is for the entire student body to read a cumulative 2,011 hours.

The theme of this year’s PARP week is “Follow the Reading Road.” To kick off the week, parents were invited to the school for a read-in, during which parents found cozy corners of the school and curled up to read a selection of books to their children.

According to PTA Co-President Michelle Gegwich, “The Washington Drive teachers are always so supportive of this program and help the children meet their reading goals.”

Community Spirit Shines at Annual Fundraiser

At the beginning of December, the Harborfields community united for the third annual HHS PTSA and Barnes & Noble Bookfair. Throughout the afternoon and evening, shoppers at Barnes & Noble were treated with performances from members of the community, ranging from a pre-school comedy troupe to high school chamber ensemble members and seasoned veteran singers.

Several members of the Harborfields School District staff and administration also made special guest appearances. Marguerite Greene, the new assistant principal at Washington Drive Primary School, read several stories to spellbound youngsters, while Mr. Jordan Cox and Mr. Stu Horowitz served cappuccinos in the café. Back by popular demand, Mrs. Allison Kraham played her guitar and sang, and convinced Mr. Rettino to sing a duet with her as well! They definitely brought down the house with their special rendition of “L-O-V-E.” Thomas J. Lahey Principal Florence Tuzzi cheered them on as the children and teachers sang “Florence Tuzzi’s coming to Town.” Howie Lyons, local Rock Star of TJL, flew (maybe on Santa’s sleigh?) to Barnes & Noble after helping the TJL Team defeat OMS in the Annual Charity Basketball Game. He arrived just in time to read to all the children, capping off a marvelous day of performers and community spirit.

Mrs. Laura Reikert allowed the district to display some masterpieces of artwork created by elementary students, which provided a perfect backdrop for the performers. Many high school students volunteered for the event, as well as countless parents. It was truly a memorable day and evening for all who were able to attend. The HHS PTSA offers their sincere thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and talent for this event.

In early December, faculty members from Oldfield Middle School and Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School competed for bragging rights in the second annual teacher’s basketball tournament. The event drew over 400 students and family members and raised $4,400, which was donated to the Harborfields Alliance for Community Outreach (HACO). HACO is a local organization that provides area residents in need with food and clothing.

The basketball tournament was organized by OMS teacher Mr. Hsaio and was sponsored by the OMS student government, under the advisement of Mrs. Russo and Mr. Havernack. In mid-December, representatives from OMS gathered to present a check to Ms. Maggie Boba, Vice President of the Harborfields Board of Education and an executive member of HACO.
WDPS Students Explore the Nation

Second-grade students in Ms. Fenter’s class at Washington Drive Primary School recently travelled across the nation from the comfort of their own classroom. As part of a larger geography lesson, the students each picked a state to research and report on. During their presentation to the class, students were asked to locate their chosen state on the map and answer certain questions from Ms. Fenter.

They were able to tell the class about a famous person born in their selected state and other interesting facts. One student, presenting on South Dakota, told students she learned that Mount Rushmore is a famous landmark in that state. Another second grader talked about the lure of Key West in Florida. Overall, the project was not only a terrific lesson on geography for the students, but further practice in their presentation skills.

In mid-November, students at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District hosted a multicultural festival for the school community, under the guidance of teachers who serve on the Multicultural Committee. Prior to the festival, the students decorated the school cafeteria with colorful balloons and flags from around the world. For the celebration, middle school families donated a variety of food that represented their heritages, from Polish pierogies and Italian baked ziti to Chinese lo mein and Thai chicken skewers.

During the festival, students also performed musical numbers for all in attendance. Ellie Horn and Alisa Chang played piano; Erica Brousseau, Marc Hochwald, and Nora Gleeson performed on cello and violin; and Gabriela Farino performed a vocal number in Italian.

In addition, Mrs. Kennedy’s Spanish class performed the Spanish Alphabet song, and Ms. Chan’s Multicultural Club performed the Hawaiian Hukilau Dance, which ended with members of the audience joining in on the dance. Members of the Multicultural Club even got Principal Mrs. Giordano to join them in the Hukilau! Overall, the event was a great success!

Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School teachers Cris Brooks, Nicole Taylor and Enza Greenwald celebrated National Make a Difference Day this year in a unique way. Their classes were given the opportunity to think about someone in the Harborfields School District or community who has made a difference in their lives. The students each selected one special person that they consider to be one of our most important community members. Each of these special people received a letter from the student who selected them, stating how that person has made a difference at TJL. The honorees were also invited to a special celebration. At the ceremony, the students did a mini presentation and help up cards to spell “You Make a Difference in Our World.” Each letter in the slogan also represented a character trait to describe the honorees such as Amazing, Optimistic, etc. Refreshments were served and the honorees each took home a special memento of their day.

Students at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently took part in the school’s annual “Cold Turkey” program. They were visited by Linda Meglio, librarian at the Harborfields Public Library, who issued a challenge to the students: turn off the television, computer, and video games for five days and try other activities instead. Reading a new book, baking a cake, and playing catch outside were just a few of the alternatives Ms. Meglio offered the young students.

Ms. Meglio also explained that the library is hosting other activities throughout the week to peak children’s interest, from a “name the turkey” contest to various craft activities. If the students complete the “Cold Turkey” challenge, they will be invited to a special “Bubblemania” celebration at the library.

A Safe Halloween at HHS

On Thursday, October 28, the Harborfields High School Service Club, under the direction of Ms. Kristin Kankula, hosted its annual Safe Halloween program. Hundreds of high school volunteers, representing over 20 individual clubs, volunteered their time to transform ordinary classrooms into “spooktacular” scenes for the younger children to gather their treats.

This year, the high school welcomed princesses, superheroes, cartoon characters, and goblins, among other costumed youngsters. They, along with their parents, roamed the hallways and were delighted by the time that the high school students devoted to them.

According to Harborfields High School Principal Dr. David Bennardo, “Safe Halloween is a shining example of the nurturing way that our high school students treat the youngest members of our Harborfields community. It is truly a collaborative event that brings parents, teachers, advisors, and children together for an evening that beautifully projects small-town values.”

Formed in 1990, the Albany Marine Band became one of only 12 bands throughout the Marine Corps. Stationed at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia, this Band of fifty Marines travels throughout the United States and internationally to fulfill its mission of serving as musical ambassadors, providing music for military ceremonies, community celebrations, recruiting programs, and official events.

The Albany Marine Band began the day at Harborfields by performing for students, staff, and administrators on James Brennan Memorial Field. They then devoted their time during the day to host two clinics for members of the high school bands.

According to Tom Gellert, Director of Music and Art for the Harborfields Central School District, “It was a very special honor to be able to host the band. It was also wonderful to welcome Steve back to Harborfields.”

Tornadoes Stir Up Spirit

On Saturday, October 23 the Harborfields community gathered at James Brennan Memorial Field to celebrate Homecoming 2010 amongst fellow classmates, alumni, parents, and district staff. To begin the day, the district’s athletic department hosted its Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. This annual celebration honors the district’s top scholar-athletes who donned the Tornado uniform over the years. During the ceremony, Jim Abbott (Class of ’77), Mark Millon (Class of ’89) and Victoria Cunningham (Class of ’04) were recognized.

The Homecoming Parade kicked off soon after, during which each graduating class showcased their float, based on the theme of “Civilizations.” In addition, the cheerleaders, marching band, and dance team kept the crowd entertained. Seniors Michael Kelly and Stephanie Henriquez also made a special guest appearance as the Homecoming King and Queen, respectively.

Following the parade, the Harborfields Varsity Football team took on the Deer Park Falcons. The Tornadoes took the lead in the first quarter and managed to hold on for a win with a score of 15-14. The victory was only one highlight of a week’s worth of festivities geared at stirring up Tornado spirit, from high school spirit days to the traditional homecoming dance.

In a letter to students, Principal Dr. David Bennardo said, “This year’s celebration established yet another chapter in the rich book of traditions that characterize our special Harborfields spirit. We look forward to riding the wave of Homecoming enthusiasm well into winter season.”

OMS Students Recognize Board of Education

Prior to the start of the October 13 Business Meeting, the Harborfields Central School District’s Board of Education was recognized as part of New York State’s School Board Recognition Week. Each year, a different school within the district hosts the ceremony to thank the trustees for their time and dedication to the students of Harborfields. This year, students at Oldfield Middle School (OMS) shared their words of thanks.

During the ceremony, which was organized by the OMS PTA, members of the school’s Student Government presented the Board with a beautiful silver pitcher, to use and display at each meeting. The students said, “Thank you for changing this building from a school into a home.” In addition, OMS parent Lisa McCaffrey, along with daughter Jaime, presented the Board with a beautiful cake, made to resemble OMS.

Thank you to all members of the Board of Education for all they do on behalf of the district.

TJL Students Create Pinwheels for Peace

In late September, students in Ms. Laura Riekert’s art classes at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School created Pinwheels for Peace, in celebration of International Day of Peace on September 21. Pinwheels for Peace is a global movement that encourages students from across the world to make pinwheels on which they express their feelings about what is happening in the world.

This year marked the third year that Ms. Riekert participated in the project with her students. After students created their pinwheels, they planted them in front of the school as a symbol of their hope for peace. Pictured are some of Ms. Riekert’s students with their beautiful creations.

Students Learn Bus Safety Through “Safety Sally” Program

In mid-September, students at Washington Drive Primary School participated in a “Safety Sally Bus Program,” geared at teaching students the rules of safely traveling in and around a bus. Early in the school day, the Eastern Suffolk BOCES School Bus Safety Mobile Classroom arrived at Washington Drive, ready to welcome students aboard. The mobile classroom, which looks like a typical school bus from the outside, is an actual classroom on the inside, featuring televisions, safety posters, and other instructional materials.

Once the students boarded the safety bus, Kay Heidt (a.k.a. “Safety Sally”), a certified teacher with Eastern Suffolk BOCES, discussed bus safety. Ms. Heidt reviewed rules such as “stay seated,” “always buckle your seat belt,” and “stay quiet so the driver can stay focused.” Students then viewed a video titled, “Pooh’s Great School Bus Adventure,” which also focused on vital safety tips. For second-grade students, Ms. Heidt stressed that they are the role models on the school bus and that younger students look up to them to exhibit proper bus behavior. To conclude the program, students took part in an emergency bus dismissal.

According to Ms. Heidt, “This program is so important for young children in order for them to develop a healthy respect for school buses. They also need to understand what to do inside a school bus so that the driver can do his/her job safely.”

High School Senior Named National Merit Semifinalist

Harborfields High School senior Pam Wax was named a Semifinalist in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program, representing less than one percent of high school seniors throughout the country who achieved this great honor. Pam was named a National Merit Semifinalist based upon her outstanding academic record, high scores on the Preliminary SAT test, and recommendation from High School Principal Dr. David Bennardo.

Of her honor, Pam said, “It’s a privilege to be named a Semifinalist and I’m very excited to be part of such a prestigious competition and program.” Pam is not only a dedicated student, but devotes much of her time to extracurricular activities at Harborfields High School. She is the Class of 2011 president and is involved in numerous clubs including the Science Research Club, Tri-Fit Club, Students for Global Justice, Theater Company, and National Honor Society. Pam also runs on the Cross-Country team and conducts science research throughout the year at Stony Brook University. Pam hopes to enter the medical and science research fields in the future, although she is unsure of her exact career path at the moment.

As a Semifinalist, Pam will now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for one of approximately 8,400 National Merit Scholarships, worth a combined total of $36 million.

To begin the day, all staff gathered at Oldfield Middle School, where Superintendent Frank Carasiti extended his greetings. In his address, Mr. Carasiti said, “Teachers can change lives. He concluded his remarks by stressing the importance that the arts play in education. Regent Tilles said, “Creative thinking must be integral to education. It enhances understanding of other subject areas.”

Climbing the Educational Ladder

With an aura of success in the air, graduates marched onto the James T. Brennan Memorial Field for what marked their final step in the Harborfields education ladder. Families, friends, teachers, administrators and staff gathered on June 26th to honor the graduating class of 2010 during their special commencement ceremony.

Appreciation for their education, their families, and their peers was a common theme among each of the speeches. With his head held high,Valedictorian Eliott Fell said “We owe those who run Harborfields a great deal of thanks; we truly appreciate everything you’ve done for us and as students, we have much to be proud of.” Salutatorian Christopher Price echoed the sentiments. “This educational process was not about any piece of paper … but about obtaining an education that can change the world… The Class of 2010 title is an ever-present reminder that Harborfields has given us an understanding of life in a global society.”

In his closing remarks to students, Principal Dr. David Bennardo reflected on the four years he and fellow administrators have spent getting to know the class. “I wasn’t supposed to stare at a blank legal pad for two weeks, but I couldn’t find the words to describe how much you mean to us, ” he recounted. “For the past four years, you’ve inspired us … our lives and hearts have been intertwined forever.”

Holocaust Survivor Visits OMS

Eighth graders at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District recently attended a lecture given by Pearl Rosen, Holocaust survivor and grandmother to Oldfield 8th grader Ben Rosen. For the second year in a row, Ms. Rosen spoke with students about the horrors of the Holocaust and the triumph of the human spirit as she witnessed them. Over the course of two days, she discussed her experiences and answered questions from the students.
Ms. Rosen was born and raised in Vizhnitza, Romania. After providing a brief history of Stalin and Hitler’s impact on the region, their nonaggression pacts, and the invasion of Romania in 1939, Ms. Rosen detailed her experiences living and surviving in the ghetto where she and her family were forced to live. Throughout the presentation, Ms. Rosen explained how she felt lucky to have been given the opportunities which helped her survive. Finally, she emphasized how proud she felt to be able to come and speak to the students, and encouraged them to speak up and protect one another when they see injustice.

Taking on the Teacher Challenge

In light of the earthquake in Haiti, staff at Oldfield Middle School rose to the challenge of raising money by hosting a Teacher Challenge fundraiser. The undertaking asked teachers, administrators and staff to volunteer for a fun “challenge” of their choice. By making a donation in each volunteer’s jar, students voted for which challenge they would most like to see performed. Recently, the entire school came together to watch staff members with the highest donations perform their outrageous challenges, which raised more than $700 for the victims in Haiti. Activities performed included running around the entire school building several times, bobbing for apples, and sliming the school’s principal.

Harborfields Runner Sets National Record
Harborfields High School sophomore Kelsey Margey recently won the New York State Federation title in the 1,000M at this past weekend’s New York State Championship meet. With a time of 2:51.87, Kelsey currently has the fastest time in the 1,000 in the nation.

Kelsey, who only started to run this year to “stay in shape for lacrosse,” has had a remarkable season. She won the Suffolk County IV title, and took first at the state qualifier. In addition, Kelsey capped her regular indoor season with a win in the 1,000 at the Long Island Invitational at St. Anthony’s several weekends ago.

“The sky is the limit for this student athlete,” said District Director of Athletics John Valente, “She is equally talented in the classroom, as well as being so gracious, humble, and driven in every aspect.” Congratulations to Kelsey, and her coaches, Chris Kahler and Jenny Turzer.

SAILing THEIR WAY TO THE TOP

Twenty-three fifth-grade students from Thomas J. Lahey (TJL) Elementary School’s Spotlighting Abilities of Inquisitive Learners (SAIL) program in the Harborfields Central School District recently volunteered to participate in a trivia challenge. Sponsored by United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Suffolk County, students had friends and family members sponsor them for each correct response to a 100-question trivia challenge. All together, the students raised more than $1,700 for UCP, which will be used to support important programs for children and adults with the disease.

In addition to raising funds, the top two scoring teams from TJL represented their school at the countywide challenge that was held on March 2 in Commack. Team TJL tied for the 1st Place trophy in Suffolk County. That team consisted of the following fifth graders: Greta Browne, Falyn Dwyer, Matthew Katz, Alyssa Mastrantonio, Camille Powers, Jack Stanisci, Connor Stewart, and Matthew Vahling.

The remaining students who participated in the fundraiser were: Ishaan Lohia, Donovan Snyder, Brendan Quinn, Elizabeth Larkin, Brooke Drexler, Caroline Sheehan, Daniel Garvey, Cole Wadler, Will Seligmann, Daniel Ash, Mackenzie Dash, Levi Tuck, Eamon O’Hare, Hope Greco, and Casandra Moisanu.

NINTH GRADERS BUDDY-UP TO LEARN THE ROPES

Incoming ninth-grade students at Harborfields High School recently had the opportunity to take advantage of the district’s Buddy Program as a way of familiarizing themselves with their new school building. As part of the program, upperclassmen at the high school volunteer their time to mentor the newest members to the school. The upperclass mentors answer freshman questions, give their buddies a tour of the building, and help them find their lockers and classrooms.

The entire daylong orientation program also included a welcome address by Principal Dr. David Bennardo and several presentations by assistant principals and fellow students. Topics for the presentations included time management and decision-making. The program concluded with a lunch celebration.

All-State Musicians

Harborfields Central School District recently announced that their music department had eight students chosen to perform in the 2009 NYSSMA All-State performing groups. This amazing accomplishment is based upon the superior performance of the musicians at last spring's NYSSMA All-State auditions. More than 7,000 students statewide compete each year for selection to NYSSMA All-State. Only a small, select group of the best high school musicians are chosen for each instrumental/vocal section of the band, choir and orchestra that form elite performing groups at the state level.

“The eight students chosen from Harborfields High School represent our finest musicians and validate the success of our high school small group lesson program, as well as our full ensemble program,” declared District Director for Music and Fine Arts Tom Gellert. “In the eleven years I’ve been with Harborfields, this is the highest number of students we’ve had chosen for All-State.”

Congratulations to the following students on their selection to an All-State performing group:
Allison Abbott - Soprano II (All-State Mixed Chorus)
Joseph Antonucci - Trumpet (All-State Symphony Orchestra)
Myles Drance - Bassoon (Alternate)

Erin Barth-Dwyer - Soprano II (All-State Mixed Chorus)

Jessica Englander - Bb Clarinet (All-State Symphonic Band)

Katelyn Gallanty - Soprano II (Alternate)

Lauren Oliveri - English Horn (All-State Symphony Orchestra)

Jaclyn Rittershaus - Bb Clarinet (Alternate)

The 2009 NYSSMA All-State Festival is held in conjunction with the Annual NYSSMA Winter Conference in Rochester, NY. Students will rehearse and perform with their respective All-State groups at this year's conference, December 3-6.
