Congratulations to Harborfields High School senior Samantha Lustig who was recently honored with an inaugural Tim Bassett Leadership Award for her dedication to Athletes Helping Athletes.
The Long Island-based nonprofit is a leadership program available to high school students that express interests in helping to prepare elementary school students for middle school and beyond. AHA’s mission is to inspire leadership through sports, while addressing social issues, such as life skills, sportsmanship, civility, substance abuse prevention, violence prevention and physical activity.
The leadership award is named after late New York Nets professional basketball player and longtime member of AHA’s training staff Tim Bassett. Recipients of the award are selected based on an extraordinary commitment to mentoring younger students, a keen understanding of life skills and sportsmanship and an ultimate team player mentality.
Samantha, was one of nine students of more than 1,000 student athletes from more than 35 high schools to receive the prestigious award.
Samantha is treasurer of Harborfields High School’s Athletes Helping Athletes program, is a member of the school’s kickline and field hockey teams and was also recently announced as the school’s Class of 2020 salutatorian. She is co-president of Spanish club, president and founder of dance club, a volunteer with Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School’s girl’s empowerment program, “Girls on the Run” and a member of Tri-M music, national foreign language and national honor societies.
“On behalf of everyone involved with our Student Athlete Leadership Team, I want to congratulate each of the nine recipients of our first-ever Tim Bassett Leadership Awards,” AHA Executive Director Warren Breining said. “Many of these students had the pleasure and honor to sit before Tim during a number of training sessions throughout their high school careers. That each of these outstanding young men and women are being honored with an award named in Tim’s memory, is living proof to the positive impact he had in the lives of others.”
