Harborfields’ Concert for a Cure

main thumbnail169257
May 8 was a night of hope, positivity and community as Harborfields High School students, teachers and staff gathered for a virtual concert in honor of two Harborfields students – Gabby Cava and Maggie Schmidt – who recently lost their lives to childhood cancer.

High school student Melina Sandel served as the concert’s emcee but was also responsible for spearheading the entire event, according to Principal Timothy Russo. She welcomed everyone to the concert and introduced each of the performers with enthusiasm and poise.

To kick the night off, Maggie’s father and co-founder of Maggie’s Mission, Steve Schmidt, and science teacher, Daniel Barrett, performed “Don’t Let Me Down,” by The Beatles. The night consisted of 31 acts, featuring performances and messages of hope from current students, class representatives, alumni, teachers and staff.
To close out the evening, Josh Klinghoffer, former guitarist for The Red Hot Chili Peppers performed “Angel” by Jimi Hendrix in honor of Maggie Schmidt, whose favorite band was The Red Hot Chili Peppers, according to Melina.

In addition to raising awareness of childhood cancer through the nonprofits, Maggie’s Mission and Gabby Gives, all of the proceeds from the concert went towards COVID-19 research. In honor of their only daughter, the Schmidt family also announced a $5,000 scholarship for the Class of 2020.

“This is one of the hallmarks of what we do,” Mr. Russo said. “It’s tough to not be with everyone as we celebrate the lives of Gabby and Maggie. But, I also know that we can take some strength and look at how the Cava and Schmidt families have really inspired a lot of us.”
