Harborfields High School students are getting a new perspective on mindfulness—one that comes directly from their fellow classmates. Starting Dec. 7, members of the school’s Mindfulness Club have made it their mission to create a series of social emotional activities to share with their peers each Monday.

During this unprecedented time, the Harborfields Central School District has been even more dedicated to increasing mindfulness among its students through social emotional learning opportunities.

The high school’s “Mindfulness Monday” sessions range from breathing to self-care to meditation exercises, and are offered during varying times each Monday to accommodate different stressors imposed on students throughout the day.

Following along with a familiar voice, allows students to better relate and engage in the weekly social-emotional learning activities, according to social worker Susan Koenig.

Additionally, Harborfields High School Assistant Principal Allison Joyce explained that the short mindfulness lessons have already helped to expand students’ attention span, manage stress, increase their sense of well-being, improve communication skills, enhance empathy skills and refine social skills. “Including mindfulness in our education model has the potential to truly help our students,” she said.
