Harborfields High School seniors Aidan Cordero and Simon Kapen were announced as semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program on Sept. 11.

The students are two of approximately 16,000 semifinalists that will compete for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships totaling $19 million to be offered to graduating seniors for their freshmen years of college.

To be eligible, students had to score within the top 1 percent on a preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. Aidan and Simon were two of approximately 1.2 million students to do so and will continue to compete to become finalists.

After graduation, Simon plans to study computer science at either Cornell University, Binghamton University or Stony Brook University. Aidan has his hopes set on the Massachusetts Institute of technology, where he plans to major in computational biology.

While both students were equally excited to hear of their advancement in the program, they are wasting no time brainstorming an essay topic for the next phase of the application.
Congratulations, Aidan and Simon!
