On Nov. 14, science research students at Harborfields High School participated in the first phase of the Spark Challenge at Northwell Health.

The students traveled to Northwell Health headquarters in Lake Success and met with a team of medical professionals who deal with addiction intervention. This team of professionals, led by Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, has revolutionized the treatment of addiction as a disease rather than a stigmatized choice.

They learned about various professions involved including, pediatric emergency medicine, health coach, project manager, social worker, senior research analyst and social media and public relations specialist. They met with all of these professionals, as well as some of the executives, at Northwell Health before breaking into groups to made Public Service Announcement videos, showing what they learned.

During phase two of the challenge, students will create posters about the varying professions and present them at a symposium in April.
