The goal of Literacy Collaborative is to help expand the literacy achievement for every child in the WDPS. Our collaborative efforts will help us develop lifelong readers, writers, and learners.
When was Literacy Collaborative implemented in Harborfields?
In 1998, Harborfields Central School District embraced new initiatives to enhance literacy instruction for our youngest students. The Literacy Collaborative has been implemented in several phases first at the Taylor Avenue Early Childhood Center and then at the Washington Drive Primary School. Currently, Washington Drive Primary School is a Literacy Collaborative recognized school of excellence.
How does Literacy Collaborative help achieve successful literacy education?
Literacy Collaborative supports school reform through a language and literacy framework, an ongoing professional development program, a process for documenting children’s literacy growth over time, and in-school leadership.
What will my child’s literacy learning look like?
In all K-2 classrooms, a language and literacy framework is implemented. Children engage in authentic and meaningful literacy experiences while participating in whole class, small group, and individual activities. Classroom centers are used to provide additional learning opportunities.
Reading experiences include read alouds , shared reading , guided reading , and independent reading . Writing experiences include shared writing, interactive writing , writing workshop , and independent writing. Children also become actively involved in word study to learn more about phonics and spelling.
How does Literacy Collaborative support learning at the WDPS?
Classroom instruction is differentiated to meet the needs of all students. An expansive book room allows teachers to select materials toward this goal.
We offer a variety of programs which provide additional support.
