Harborfields High School senior Hannah Serwan has been awarded the Long Island Arts Alliance’s Scholar-Artist Merit Award in Dance. One of three students to receive this specific recognition in her discipline, Serwan is also one of only 20 students on Long Island to receive this award in any artistic field.

Endorsed by the New York State School Music Association, the New York State Art Teachers Association, the Nassau and Suffolk chapters of the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education, and the Nassau and Suffolk Art Supervisors Associations, LIAA’s Scholar-Artist program recognizes outstanding high school students who shine in both classroom settings and artistic pursuits. Serwan certainly fits the bill.

“Hannah always puts her heart and soul into everything she sets out to accomplish,” guidance counselor Jackie Best said. As the advisor for Harborfields High School’s kickline and Dance Club, Best has firsthand knowledge of that fact. “Aside from academic success, Hannah always finds time to pursue her passion for the arts. Hannah has been a valuable member of the Harborfields kickline for the past four years and her rise to choreographer and captain is due in large part to her perseverance and commitment. She is also a member of our Dance Club and an integral member at her dance studio where she studies ballet several days a week.”

Serwan will be recognized at an awards ceremony in the spring and in Newsday in June. Excited about the entire experience, she is also quick to share the credit with those who have worked with her along the way.

“I am so honored to have received this award," Serwan said. “I am grateful for my family, teachers and ballet instructors for their guidance and support.”
