Fifth graders in Samantha Howe, Kelly Teape and Susan Turrini’s class at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently visited the broadcast studio at Harborfields High School, where broadcast journalism and video production teacher Vincent Ambrosio helped them to produce their own “Lahey Tornadoes” show.

“Every day our class watches a 10-minute news program called ‘CNN10,’ which provides current events and other stories about the world,” Turrini said. “Our students wanted to make their own show that we called the ‘Lahey Tornadoes.’ I contacted Mr. Ambrosio, and we worked together to design the project. As a class, we decided on the theme of the Super Bowl.”

The students were divided into four groups, each handling a different project: a current events story, a 10-second trivia story, a feel good story and a 10-out-of-10 story. They wrote stories, found pictures and decided on a recording plan. Next, the fifth graders took a field trip to the high school, where Ambrosio and two of his broadcast students gave the younger students a tour of the studio before working with them to create the “Lahey Tornadoes” show.
