Harborfields Welcomes The Year of the Horse

In recent weeks, students across all four schools had opportunities to learn about the Lunar New Year through a variety of classroom activities and school events.
At Washington Drive, kindergarten students celebrated the Lantern Festival, the traditional conclusion of the Lunar New Year, with a Lantern Light Parade around the building. Dressed in festive red, they carried lanterns they created and shared “wish boxes” filled with their hopes for the year ahead. In another classroom, students examined decorative banners commissioned from a calligrapher, learning about the couplets and the wishes they represent for the new year. Students also received traditional lucky red envelopes as part of the lesson.
Elementary students also explored the holiday through crafts and classroom activities, including creating “compliment fortune cookies” to share kind words with classmates. The Discovery Chest on loan from the Huntington Arts Council provided additional hands-on opportunities for students to learn about Chinese culture.
At the secondary level, learning also came from students themselves. In one English as a New Language class, a student shared traditional Chinese dishes, decorations, and a presentation explaining the history and customs of the Lunar New Year. At the high school, members of the Multicultural Club hosted a celebration featuring activities such as mahjong and Asian brush painting, giving students a chance to learn about traditions celebrated by families in our community and around the world.
These moments provided meaningful opportunities for students to learn about traditions celebrated by members of our community and around the world while building understanding and connection across our schools.
