The Harborfields Board of Education is made up of seven residents of the community who serve staggered three-year terms, without compensation, as your representatives in all matters concerning the school district. Board elections are held annually in the spring. The Board has its own bylaws, which have been developed within the bounds of legal authority granted to local boards by the State of New York.

Regular business meetings are usually held on the third Wednesday of the month in the auditorium of the Oldfield Middle School, and are noted on the school calendar. Board meetings begin at 7:45 p.m. Community members are welcome at meetings and time is reserved on the agenda for public comment.

2025-2026 Board of Education Goals

The Board of Education is committed to fulfill the mission of the Harborfields Central School District to provide an innovative and collaborative learning environment where all students are empowered to realize their unique potential while striving for academic excellence. Harborfields is committed to developing life-long learners with the intellectual, social, and emotional skills necessary to achieve success as active citizens within their local community and in an ever-changing diverse global society.

  • The Board of Education, in collaboration with the Superintendent and his team, will:

    • Provide impactful professional development opportunities that equip educators with the knowledge and skills to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) in their professional growth. This includes building capacity to use AI tools in developmentally appropriate ways that enhance student learning, while also addressing the ethical, instructional, and societal implications of AI in an increasingly dynamic and globalized world.
    • Initiate a formal review of the district’s mission statement through a collaborative and inclusive process that actively engages a broad range of stakeholders. This review will ensure that the mission statement accurately reflects the district’s dedication to academic excellence and the social-emotional well-being of our students, while also honoring the core values and long-standing traditions of the Harborfields learning community.
    • Build upon existing efforts to strengthen and evaluate district security measures and emergency procedures. In partnership with security consultants, local law enforcement, and emergency management officials, the district will assess current practices, reinforce staff training, and implement enhancements that reflect recommendations from security audits and best practices in school safety as part of the district’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students and staff.
  • The Board of Education, in collaboration with the Superintendent and his team will:

    • Support student excellence in literacy through the alignment and continuity of evidence-based instructional best practices, grounded in the Science of Reading, across all content areas and grade levels. This will be accomplished by building upon the existing work of the faculty and the district’s Literacy Committee to address identified needs through targeted professional development and the use of highquality educational materials.
    • Prepare students for success in postsecondary education and the evolving global workforce by building upon K12 programming opportunities that allow students to apply their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills to interdisciplinary research projects. This work will include the integration of age-appropriate instruction on information literacy to help students rigorously evaluate sources, interpret data, and navigate digital content responsibly and ethically in an increasingly complex information landscape.
  • The Board of Education, in collaboration with the Superintendent and his team will:

    • Safeguard the district’s financial resources by continually evaluating practices and strengthening cyber security protocols. This includes implementing proactive measures to ensure fiscal responsibility, enhancing systems to protect sensitive data, and regularly evaluating internal controls to mitigate risk and ensure long-term operational stability.
    • Strategically allocate district resources to ensure sustainable and equitable support for all students while exploring innovative means of meeting student needs and interests. This includes aligning budgetary decisions with instructional priorities, promoting access to high-quality learning opportunities, and investing in programs that foster creativity, critical thinking, and future-ready skills.
