Second graders in two different classrooms at Washington Drive Primary School prepared for Veterans Day with special events.

In Deborah Phillips’ class, students learned about Veterans Day and the five branches of the military. They created paper medals of honor with messages on the back, which were gifted to veterans at the Northport Veterans Hospital Golf Course over Veterans Day weekend. Her class also created a large poster for display in the golf club house.

U.S. Army veteran Otto DeBenedictis, the father of teacher Denise Sullivan, visited the classroom she shares with teacher Suzanne Chmura, whose husband is currently deployed with U.S. Army in Kuwait. The second graders greeted DeBenedictis by singing "You're a Grand Old Flag," and created signs thanking him for his service DeBenedictis spoke to the students about his time in the army, including playing baseball.
