Harborfields High School media students from the Tornado New Team recently worked with Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School’s new Lion’s Den News Club, guided by advisers Christine Collins and Michele Turchiano, and Washington Drive Primary School’s Little Tornadoes News Club, guided by Melissa Owen. The high schoolers act as producers and facilitators, working with the TJL and Washington Drive news staffs and club advisers to film news shows and feature segments and learning how to livestream events. The initiative is part of an “internship experience” pilot in advance of the creation of a Career and Technical Education-Media pathway program planned for next year.

“Creating experiences like these, where high students take on mentorship roles with the younger students in our district, has become a focal point for the growth of this program as well as the growth of students at all levels,” said mass media, video production and English teacher Vincent Ambrosio, who serves as the Tornado News Team’s adviser. “Nothing is more powerful and inspirational than creating authentic experiences where the outcomes of student learning and academic activities have real impacts on real people in their community and beyond.”
