Fifth graders at Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School recently experienced a professional day of hands-on, real-world learning at Commerce Plaza in Levittown. The students prepare for this experience by engaging in financial literacy lessons during the school day. They are given the opportunity to fill out resumes, apply for jobs, create advertisements and learn how to write checks. This annual financial literacy unit culminates with a trip to Commerce Plaza. Each student is given a position and spends the day “working” in their business roles such as bankers, physicians, wait staff, reporters or editors.

“Commerce Plaza has been a tradition here at TJL,” Principal Jennifer Washington said. “Our students learn to work together and complete job responsibilities throughout the day.”
